A NAVHDA-sanctioned test is an event organized by local NAVHDA Chapters that meets the requirements for one of three types of tests: the Natural Ability Test (NA), the Utility Preparatory Test (UPT), or the Utility Test (UT). These tests are conducted on appropriate grounds that include suitable cover and water, use acceptable birds, and are overseen by three approved judges from NAVHDA’s Approved Judges List. All tests are registered and scheduled in advance with NAVHDA International and are announced nationally to encourage participation and increase recognition.

Our chapter is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. To ensure consistency and effective management, our founders established a set of bylaws that serve as the guiding principles for our internal operations. These bylaws are reviewed regularly, revised as needed, and made available to members. The chapter’s leadership consists of four elected officers—President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer—who form the Executive Council. Regular elections for officers and board members ensure fresh perspectives, relevance, and member involvement in the chapter’s direction.
Not at all! Our chapter includes members with a wide range of experience levels, from complete beginners to seasoned members who compete with their dogs. One of our primary goals is to share knowledge and experience. Advanced members are always willing to help those who are new to training, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.

While testing is a useful tool for measuring a versatile hunting dog’s natural abilities and advanced skills against established standards, it’s entirely optional. NAVHDA tests are non-competitive, meaning dogs are evaluated individually rather than against each other, so everyone has the opportunity to earn a prize. Even if you choose not to test your dog, you can still benefit as a member by accessing training grounds, experienced trainers, training equipment, and birds.
To participate in a NAVHDA-sanctioned test, the versatile hunting dog’s registered owner must be a member in good standing with NAVHDA International, and the dog being tested must be registered with NAVHDA. The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) defines a versatile hunting dog as “The dog that is bred and trained to dependably hunt and point game, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water.” (NAVHDA Aims, Programs, Test Rules). NAVHDA International recognizes 31 breeds as Versatile Hunting Dogs, each possessing the broad range of skills necessary to excel in NAVHDA-sanctioned tests and in hunting scenarios.
These breeds originated in Europe, as no distinct versatile hunting dog has been developed in North America. In the field, a versatile hunting dog should demonstrate a keen nose, staunch pointing ability, and a willingness to search for, track, and retrieve game cooperatively. Additionally, they must transfer these skills to water work, showcasing independence, stamina, and a high-quality nose. NAVHDA’s testing program provides a platform for dogs to display these abilities while remaining obedient and under control. A true versatile hunting dog performs all tasks with enthusiasm and a willingness to work with and for their handler.

Absolutely! We value family participation and recognize that today’s children are NAVHDA’s future. We encourage children of all ages to participate at a level appropriate for their age. NAVHDA offers a variety of educational and testing opportunities for younger members through our Youth Programs, fostering a love for dogs and outdoor activities. To incentivize youth participation, our chapter offers free Junior Membership to youth sixteen years of age and younger.
